Christmas Day Hunting with OCH
This painting background is constructed in a series of light transparent matte washes. The figures are painted in opaque oil with medium giving them a slight gloss. When viewed from an angle, even in dim light, one can see the Master and hounds as if they were walking off the canvas. This painting hangs in the sitting room at The Ashby Inn in Paris, VA.
I set out to paint a warm Christmas Day hunt scene with hint of tired but hopeful green grass and blue sky behind the winter tree line. The background is an under wash drawing in transparent oil that dried to a matte finish. I had planned to cover with opaque paint but found that the transparent wash color was impossible to duplicate in opaque. With the background matte and transparent and the figures opaque and semi glossy, there is an unexpected depth created. Even after looking at this painting for a year I can not decide which I would prefer. I will one day paint another canvas just to know which I like better. It is always a learning process.
