Artist pigments are either organic or inorganic colors. 20th century colors that are carbon based are considered organic. Most of these colors have a warm and cool version and are generally transparent. Colors are bright with excellent lightfastness. Indian yellow, perylene red, quinacridone red, quinacridone magenta, quinacridone violet, phthalo blue, phthalo emerald, green gold are all common in my palette. Permanent orange and hansa yellow medium or light and permanent greens are also other options I consider.
Inorganic colors are from metals such as cadnium, cobalt and iron and considered inorganic. Most of these colors are opaque and grey down easily. Scholastic palettes are usually of these classical colors. From these colors I consider yellow ochre, transparent earth red, asphaltum, venetian red, cobalt teal, cobalt blue, raw umber, burnt umber and nickel titrate yellow. I have avoided cadniums and most opaque colors since I paint at high speed. Accidentally mixing opaque colors can make the worst colors of mud in comparison to the transparent organic colors.
