The colors of a late summer or early fall palette for sporting art paintings to hang in November began with hot summer hound walks in August. As the end of August is here, the mornings are cool enough for long sleeve shirt while walking to watch horses graze with coffee. The colors change and so does my painting palette.
The last major work, Summer Morning Hound Walk, I (48"x48") included the colors transparent red earth, perelyne red, transparent red ochre, nickel titanate yellow, Indian yellow, quin violet, pthalo emerald and new to my palette, permanent orange. As I start an 18"x36" OCH Hunting First Field inspired by happening upon the hunt in my truck on Frogtown Rd, I needed some blue mystery of horses leaping out of the shadows and moving on down the road. I added a not so favorite, cobalt teal along with ultramarine blue and cheating with asphaltum (perelene red and bone black). Nickel titanante yellow is not strong enough for these so I traded it out for hansa yellow deep. I have also dropped Indian yellow, quin violet, pthalo emerald, permanent orange but keeping the reds (perelyne and trans red earth) for now. It's a simple palette with a wide range of greens and browns balanced against simple peach. I feel asleep last night trying to find the perfect composition to use this drama in a 36"x36" to go over the fireplace in the blue room. These colors have distracted me from the fun or orange and red but only long enough to finish the blue room.
