Painting Workshop Stuart Street Atelier II, April - May 2023

Afternoon pony trail ride

Gail Guirreri will teach another painting workshop at Stuart Street Atelier starting Monday April 24, 2023 and each Monday through May 29. There is an afternoon session 1-4pm and an evening session 5-8pm. The afternoon session filled but there may be some space in the evening class.

Many that took the first course will be back and ready to expand on their new palettes. We will revisit oiur minimal palette the first two Mondays. With more time between classes each will have time to order new colors based upon class discussion. The first 20 minutes or so of class we will have exercises to loosen up brush strokes, find emotional response to the subject and gain confidence that the colors are their to support you. Materials we will need are below. If you don't have time to order online for the first class, drop in at a Michaels or Hobby Lobby for Gamblin brand Magenta, Indian Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Phthalo Green and Titanium Zinc White. The brush cleaning tank is really handy and often can be found at Michaels. We use Gamsol and solvent free Gablin gel medium (comes in a tube).

Required Materials:

Brush cleaning tank - https://www.dickblick.com/items/silicoil-brush-cleaning-tank/

Second glass jar with lid and clean gamsol.

Gamsol - https://www.dickblick.com/items/gamblin-gamsol-odorless-mineral-spirits-128-oz-/

Solvent free gel medium - https://www.dickblick.com/items/gamblin-oil-medium-solvent-free-gel-medium-150-ml-tube/

Roll paper towels

Gloves (2-3 pair daily)

Linseed brush cleaner - https://www.dickblick.com/items/richeson-jacks-linseed-studio-soap-8-oz-jar/

2 small canvas paper or boards (under 16x20) daily

1 medium canvas per day or every other day. NOT LARGER than 24x36, 30x40, 30x30 or 18x36.

Brushes

The Dakota brushes have a great feel for the type of painting we will do. They push the paint rather than gloss over it. The linseed cleaner (above) is really important to use on them daily though or they wear quickly. For smaller canvases I often have two or three size 4 filberts going at once.

Dakota Filbert Brushes

Catalyst Flat brushes These brushes tend to last longer than the Dakotas and I do like them for strong drawing stages to cover more canvas and be fairly decisive. They are worth the try. Get one or both.

Aspen Filbert (option to the Dakota size 8; softer than Dakota) This filbert is a bit softer with more point than the Dakota and do tend to last longer.

Palette

Shadow box frames with glass make great stackable palettes. You can find them at wallmart with many sizes to choose from. Paint will be traveling home with you from this workshop so you might even put a bead of seal to keep them from leaking in your vehicle.

Drawing Glass

5x7 or 8x10 taped edge piece of glass and vis a vis pen works great for checking your drawings. You trace your reference image with the vis a vis onto the glass then hold the glass up to your painting when you feel stuck on a drawing. This is especially handy to gauge reference points when painting from life plein air. Not absolutely required, just highly recommended.

Paint

Gamblin paint is the least expensive for good quality level. The colors below are all great to have but if you prefer to just work with the few I listed above, that is certainly possible.

Reference images

Bring at least three images per class. Printed and cropped to scale of your canvas is ideal. Use the crop tool at artoilcolor.com for digital or printed images. One image should be a warm up. Horse eye, flower such as iris or other simple object that does not require exactness in drawing. There are reference images available for this course attached to this page.

Secondary Colors NOT required. Some artists used these colors in the last class. We will likely expand upon these in this class.
